Hanison LAU uses sculptural form to present his idea. He usually employs history and literature, especially adapted from Chinese culture as referential languages and properties to appropriate his works. He used sculpture and drawing to represent the poetic elements vested in contemporary visual art form, and his works demonstrate a strong record of personal action. Lau has now been working as an independent artist and Lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University. He received a bachelor degree of arts (Fine Art) from the RMIT University in 2005 and received a master Degree in Fine art at RMIT in 2007. He was selected as one of the highlighted artists by the Hong Kong Art Promotion Office for its ‘Artists in Neighbourhood Scheme II 2008’. He took part in the Artist-in-residence project in Portland, USA in 2008 and South Korea in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. In the last few years, he has been exhibiting his works extensively in USA, Australia, Paris, South Korea, Mainland China and Hong Kong. His work has been collected locally and internationally.
《坐臥天地間 - 香港》
Sitting Table - Hong Kong
Wood, daily objects
360cm x 160cm x 36cm
The aim of my creation is to bring a sense of joy and comfort to the audiences. I designed a place where people can sit or lay on. The shape and the material are the same as the sitting table. I put the elements of garden upon this place, including mountains, rivers, the moon and the breeze. Putting this table in the outdoors and inviting friends to come and have a sit, one can enjoy a great time on it.
The Artist used some unremarkable stuffs found in daily life to create his artwork in order to convey the message that life is not merely based on materialism but also on the appreciation of life itself, be it a trivial matter or the beautiful landscape that surrounds us. Life is full of joy and surprises and I would like to share it with the audiences.
